Flowing Water
2006
Flowing water is the main theme of my art. (I was sitting at the seaside, actually it wasn’t the sea, but the ‘IJ’, and I knew: this is what it is about). Flowing water for me means life. Life: everything that happens, or can happen, that which flows – no matter what, an incredibly impressive force.
People try to channel that life into a particular direction, they try to restrict it and to control it (out of fear). These efforts are, through my eyes, inevitably ineffectual. When water wants to overflow it will (and plants will grow as fast on the other side of the fence too).
In my work organic unities (or multities) uncage themselves regularly from structures and all attempts to cage them in.
From the one comes the other. Everything is connected with each other. A droplet can have catastrophical consequences when it is the proverbial one. Or just be very beautiful, gliding its way slowly over a rainy train window (and then the droplet-way meets its mate and they glide on together, looking for other water particles).
Droplets, grains and seconds: they all have in common that there have to be a lot of them in order to really have significance. Apparently. For every dot already carries that significance. The second encloses the hour. And the droplet the ocean.
Flowing with the ocean, that’s a great idea!
(And my starsign is pisces).
